ASP Turbine 7 Samples Installation

This section describes how to install classic ASP samples on your web server.

Installing ASP Samples

To make the Turbine samples available on your web server you need to create a Virtual Directory (also known as web-sharing a directory) pointing to the disk location of the ASP Turbine installation.
So to make the samples web-available on a Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows 2003, please follow these simple steps:

Step 1:

If you're using Windows 2000, open Programs, then open Administrative Tools, select Internet Services Manager.

On Windows XP and Windows 2003, make sure you installed "Internet Information Services (IIS)" which includes the IIS web server - you can install it at the Control Panel, "Add or Remove Programs", "Add/Remove Windows Components", check "Internet Information Services (IIS)". Once available, open Control Panel, then "Administrative Tools", then select "Internet Information Services". On both cases a window similar to the following will appear:

Step 2:

To install the samples on a new virtual directory, (this is the probably the best thing to do if you're installing for the first time), please select your Web Server, then select Default Web Site, right-click on it and choose New Virtual Directory

Step 3:

A Wizard will appear asking you for the alias you will be using for the new Virtual Directory (remember, you will later access the samples by an URL like http//server/alias/samples, where alias is the name you are defining now).

Step 4:

Next, the wizard will ask you for a disk location, which should be the Turbine installation directory that you previously choose during installation.
The last dialog of the wizard will ask you upon the access permissions - you should check:

  • Allow Read Access
  • Allow Script Access
  • Allow Directory Browsing (for ease of use)

This is how it looks on Windows 2000 and Windows XP/2003:

Then proceed and click on the the Finish button to end this step.

Step 5:

You can now proceed to the Testing the Installation section!

Testing the Installation

To test the ASP Turbine 7 installation, open a web browser (you must have the Flash plug-in installed) and enter the URL:

    http://server/alias/ReadMe.htm

where server is the machine to where you installed Turbine (possibly 127.0.0.1 - the localhost machine), and alias is the Virtual Directory you've created previously (for example TurbinePreview).
The ReadMe.htm page will appear, now do the following:
  - click on Samples (for example at the bottom of the page)
  - select the Hello Worlds Sample.

  - now type in your name on one of the input boxes.

  - after you click on one of the submit buttons you should see a new window with an "Hello name!" message, where name is the text you previously typed.

If you successfully completed these steps your installation is correct and you may proceed on your meeting with ASP Turbine 7 - Enjoy!

Otherwise, if you could not complete some of the above steps please review and then repeat your installation as explained above.
